NZVC Event Recap: Empowering Founders & Investors

Kia Ora friends!

Event: NZVC’s STARTUP LESSONS FROM THE EDGE

This event was held on August 8th as part of the Edmund Hillary Fellowship Hui Session and was well attended by some of our amazing founders, LP’s and EHF community members.

We talked about an overview of the NZVC thesis and evolution to this with time in the market. We discussed opportunities and the hurdles when taking NZ to the world. This touched on the psychology of the NZ founder - the things in our favour and the things we need to work on. Also, a lay of the land from a macro perspective. Where are the big opportunities across a range of sectors? What are the things that we need to work on?

Now that the some of the hot air has been released from the capital markets where does that leave future investment and perhaps does that even create more opportunity on a global stage for a NZ start-up eco-system.

The following founders joined this lively event with our partners Mark Pavlyukovskyy and Andre Rowell.

Janine Grainger @ Easy Crypto

Janine Grainger is the co-founder and CEO of Easy Crypto, a New Zealand cryptocurrency trading platform that attracted 150,000 customers across New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Brazil, and recorded over $1.1 billion in sales in its first 3 years. We talk to Janine about starting a global trading platform from NZ, raising $17 million and the evolution of Crypto.

Aleks Dahlberg @ Sahha

Aleks Dahlberg is harnessing the myriad of behavioural breadcrumbs collected everyday on our mobile devices to provide insights for our mental health with his company Sahha. Data points such as language, activity, sleep patterns and location sourced from the phone, and any variations from the norm can provide far more depth than a written questionnaire. Aleks shares with us his journey of idea to commercialisation, the power of behavioural data and the link between high performance and mental health.

Asa Cox @ Arcanum

Asa Cox is working to make machine learning more accessible to mid-size enterprises with Arcanum. Using its applications and a low-code platform for custom solutions, it enables data teams to rapidly deploy applications and models.

Brett Skinner and Roderick O’Hara @ Sensori

Sensori provides photogrammetry and 3D modelling for the construction industry using a regular video camera. Video is then uploaded into the Sensori system which is a fully automated pipeline for processing video data into 3D scenes and delivers the results to the user as easily accessible web links. The product is designed for construction companies and city councils for information and QA related inquiries, which otherwise results in multiple site visits and digging through reams of photographs.
